Eritrea Accuses Ethiopia of Destabilising East Africa by Arming Sudan’s RSF and Eritrean Opposition Groups (RSADO, EANC, BNH)
Eritrea has accused Ethiopia of destabilising East Africa, alleging that Addis Ababa is arming Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and hosting, training and funding Eritrean armed opposition groups, including RSADO, the Eritrean Afar National Congress (EANC) and Brigade N’Hamedu (BNH).
In a statement reported by Al Jazeera, Asmara said Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government is pursuing hostile policies and backing forces opposed to Eritrea. It also claimed Ethiopia has supported the RSF since Sudan’s war began in 2023. Ethiopia has not immediately responded, to the allegations.
Eritrea further accuses Addis Ababa of instigating war by claiming the Eritrean port of Assab.
In a recent interview Ethiopia’s ambassador to Kenya, retired Gen. Bacha Debele, called Assab “Ethiopia’s wealth” and said it would be taken “by force,” asking not whether the port belongs to Ethiopia but “how do we get it back?”
And last year Maj. Gen. Teshome Gemechu has described Assab as a “survival interest worth paying any price for” and said the port “belonged to Ethiopia.”
