Ethiopian Regime Diplomat Shiferaw Makes Provocative Claims on Eritrean Ports and Blames Egypt for Keeping Ethiopia Landlocked
On the first of September, the anniversary of the Eritrean Revolution and the start of the armed struggle for Eritrean independence, Ethiopian regime diplomat Shiferaw claimed in an interview with an Ethiopian news agency that Ethiopia has historical claims over Eritrea’s ports of Massawa and Assab, asserting that Eritrea belonged to Ethiopia. He also accused Egypt of keeping Ethiopia landlocked because of Egypt’s early support for the Eritrean Liberation Front, twisting history as if Ethiopia had not illegally annexed and invaded Eritrea from 1961 to 1991.
All in all, his remarks recycle old territorial claims and shift blame onto Egypt while ignoring Ethiopia’s own decades of annexation and war against Eritrea.
