Addis Standard Editor-in-Chief Yonas Kedir has been abducted by the Ethiopian police, as AS offices have been raided and equipment seized. The Ethiopian dictator Abiy Ahmed is not playing around anymore.

Ironically, there was a time when Addis Standard, owned by Tsedale Lemma, used to be close to the Abiy Ahmed regime of Ethiopia.

Her news outlet supported Ethiopia’s claims on Assab and invited Eritrean Afar separatists from the EANC to write guest articles. In February 2024, it published the op-ed “Establishing a ‘Special Status’ autonomy in Dankalia, a win-win proposition for Eritrea and Ethiopia” by Ahmed Y. Mohamed (leader of the Eritrean Afar National Congress), which called for autonomous governance in Dankalia that would provide Ethiopia access to Assab.
Addis Standard also supported Ethiopia’s MoU with Somaliland.

Now Addis Standard has been trapped by its former ally Abiy Ahmed.
