Eritrea Commemorates Martyrs’ Day: Honoring 60,000 Fallen Heroes

Today, Saturday, June 20, Martyrs’ Day was celebrated in Asmara and across the country.

On Martyrs’ Day, Eritreans commemorate the 60,000 fallen Eritrean martyrs who died fighting to liberate #Eritrea from the 30-year-long illegal Ethiopian occupation that followed Ethiopia’s illegal annexation of Eritrea in November 1962.

Between 1961 and 1991, nearly 60,000 Eritrean martyrs died in the liberation struggle. In total, between 150,000 and 280,000 Eritreans were killed by the successive Ethiopian regimes of Emperor Haile Selassie and the Derg.

Eritrea’s Martyrs’ Day was attended by members of the diplomatic community in Asmara, including the U.S. Embassy.
