On October 19, 2026, in St. Paul, Minnesota, 27-year-old Eritrean-American Ebro Ahmed risked his own safety to save nearly 20 children after their school bus driver suffered a medical emergency.
Outside his family’s convenience store in the Dayton’s Bluff neighborhood, he spotted the bus rolling past with its doors open and the driver in distress. Ahmed sprinted over, jumped aboard the moving vehicle, and pulled the emergency brake—after briefly shifting it into reverse by accident—bringing it to a stop. No children were injured.
(Reports place the number of students at 18 or 19; the bus was carrying kids from Battle Creek Middle School. Ahmed, whose family is from Eritrea, later said he hoped the moment would show Eritreans “in a good way.”)
