Saudi National Day was celebrated in Asmara

Saudi National Day was celebrated in Asmara, with senior Eritrean officials, including Hagos Gebrehiwot, attending the event together with representatives of the Saudi Embassy and members of the diplomatic community.

The occasion reflected the close security and economic ties between Eritrea and Saudi Arabia. In 2020, Eritrea joined the Saudi-led Council of Arab and African Coastal States of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. In the years since Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman assumed a leading role in the Kingdom, relations between Riyadh and Asmara have grown especially close. Both nations share common interests in the Red Sea region, as well as in Sudan and Somalia.

Eritrea’s presence has also been visible at the highest level. President Isaias Afwerki participated in the Saudi–Africa Summit in Riyadh in 2023 and paid a working visit to the Kingdom from 9 to 13 December 2025 to strengthen bilateral and trade ties. During the visit, he held talks with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Riyadh. He later travelled to Jeddah, where he met the President of the Saudi Ports Authority, Engineer Suliman bin Khalid Al-Mazroua, as well as senior officials of Jeddah Islamic Port, and toured port facilities, including the Red Sea Gateway Terminal.
