Eritrean businessmen in Angola recently met with Angolan government representatives to explore investments in transport and infrastructure.
The discussions were facilitated by the Eritrean Embassy in Angola, where Consul-General Dessale Berthane conveyed the keen interest of Eritrean entrepreneurs to Provincial Governor Suzana Abreu of Cabinda Province on June 25, 2026.
Eritrean businessmen often excel in countries like Angola, Uganda, and beyond in sectors such as trade, construction, and transportation, while facing significant barriers at home.
Why do they thrive everywhere except in Eritrea itself? Why does the Eritrean government actively promote Eritrean investment and business activities outside the country but not inside it?
Our government is mismanaging the country. Instead of shifting blame solely onto the harmful anti-Eritrean sanctions, Eritrea’s leadership should urgently implement the long-promised economic reforms — including lifting the ban on private construction (in place since 2006) and easing strict import restrictions and foreign-exchange controls.
These steps would unlock domestic private enterprise and reduce reliance on diaspora capital inflows alone.
