Paying tribute to Berhane Abrehe: Former Eritrean Minister of Finance who died last week in Eritrea, after being in custody for 6 years since September 2018, following the publication of a book critiquing the Eritrean government and accusing them of corruption.
Berhane Abrehe was popular among all Eritreans of every political spectrum. Berhane joined the Eritrean struggle for independence in 1975, fighting for the EPLF. He played a significant role in the EPLF throughout the independence struggle. After Eritrea became independent, he served as Minister for Land and Water. From 2001 to 2012, Berhane Abrehe served as Eritrean Minister of Finance. In 2012, he was removed from the post as Minister of Finance after he critiqued the Eritrean government’s interference in the Ministry of Finance in Eritrea.
In 2018, Berhane published his book, for which he was later imprisoned without a trial and spent the last days of his life there. Like Berhane Abrehe, we have had many political prisoners in Eritrea. Rest in Power, Berhane Abrehe.
